The most basic foundation for a proper swim stroke is your breathing. If you do not have a good breathing rhythm, you could feel out of breath, like you need to rush your stroke and even hyperventilate at certain times.

By developing a proper breathing pattern you will swim more relaxed and you will allow yourself to focus on developing the proper swim mechanics versus rushing through your stroke as you are only concerned about getting your next breath of oxygen.
