Patricia Brownell

E3 Level 1 Coach

PatriciaB1

Patricia grew up in Northwest Wisconsin where she was a gymnast, played basketball and attained her purple belt in Taekwondo. She moved to Boston in 2002, where she gained an interest in running after volunteering at the Boston Marathon, running dozens of shorter events and half marathons before finishing her first full marathon in 2007.

Plagued with several injuries, her husband (then boyfriend) bought her a bike, hoping some cross training would aid with injury prevention. She fell in love with riding immediately, decided it was time to learn how to swim and completed her first Ironman, Ironman Wisconsin, less than a year later, her fourth ever triathlon. Unfortunately, the cross training did not assist with injury prevention and in late 2009, she underwent bilateral surgery to correct labral tears and impingement in her hips. Less than six months after surgery, she was back on the podium. Having spent countless hours in physical therapy correcting severe muscles imbalances while still competing at a high level in triathlon has given her a good understanding of correct biomechanical movement and the importance of injury prevention.

In 2010, Patricia joined Team Type 1, a team whose mission is to instill hope and inspiration in people with Type 1 diabetes. Patricia was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 12. She was also diagnosed with celiac disease in 2008. Having two auto-immune disorders have given her an extensive knowledge of the importance of fueling properly in all aspects of sport.

Finding it difficult to continue to work full time while maintain her athletic and coaching pursuits, Patricia left her law firm job of 10 years to coach with E3 full time. She is a Certified USAT Level 1 Coach and an E3 level 1 certified coach.
